What gutter cleaning does
The aim is simple: gutters that are clear, so rainwater runs along the run and away through the downpipe instead of spilling over the edge. A clear gutter keeps water moving away from the wall, the fascia and the base of the house, which is where the damage starts when it cannot get away.
Gutters are cleared from the ground with a high-reach gutter vacuum, so there is no ladder against the guttering on most homes. The leaves, moss and silt are bagged and taken away, and the downpipe outlets are checked so water can run freely.
Why it matters
A blocked gutter does not stay a small problem. Water backs up, sits against the fascia and finds its way behind the boards or into the wall. Once that starts, it is no longer a gutter job. Clearing the run before the wet months is the simplest way to avoid it.
Autumn is the obvious time, after the leaves have fallen, and again after storms. Spring is worth a look too if there are trees close to the roof.
